Clubs & Activities
ROBOTICS
Robotics is an “invitation only” program for grades 5th-8th that focuses on coding and hardware building of actual robots. This year we will bring this concept to an “in school” enrichment period, as opposed to an after school extracurricular. All students will participate in a robotics unit, with in-house competitions taking place in both Sumobots and RCX.
ART CLUB
The Art Clubs at NDA meet once a month after school for a one-hour session. Students will create a variety of crafts and engage in creative processes such as painting, sculpting, and collage. Many students participate in art competitions with the artwork created through this club.
CHOIR
Choir typically meets weekly depending on the number of students participating. Students learn music theory and gain sight-reading skills. Those that participate attend practices and sing weekly at the school liturgy.
SAINTS SERVICE COUNCIL
Saints Service Council is a service-based club. The club consists of representatives from grades 4-8. To date, some of the service projects include collecting coats in conjunction with Burlington Coat Factory, collecting canned goods for Shively Area Ministries, playing bingo with residents at a local area nursing home, providing nursing home residents with Easter baskets and bell ringing for the Salvation Army. Club members play an active role in decision making and working within our school and greater community to lend others a hand.
QUICK RECALL
Quick Recall is an academic quiz bowl competition featuring two halves of tossup and bonus questions. This is the primary form of traditional academic competition in Kentucky. Four students compete against another school’s four students by answering questions read by the moderator and try to provide a correct answer while simultaneously beating the clock and their competitors.
Y CLUB
Y Club is a student-run school-based organization for Grades 6-8 that promotes civic engagement, servant leadership, and social responsibility through model government, service learning, and advocacy. Each school chooses the level of involvement in KY YMCA Programs such as KYA and KUNA. Along with participating in service opportunities throughout the year, chapters participate in a fall service project that focuses on their local community, and a spring project that focuses on our global community.
THE KENTUCKY YOUTH ASSEMBLY (KYA)
KYA is a three-day experiential learning conference in which students participate directly in a simulation of the Commonwealth’s democratic process. Acting as Senators and Representatives, students write, debate, and vote on legislation that affects them. As candidates, lobbyists, or members of the media, students experience the rich spectrum of activity that constitutes our political process. As advocates and justices, students argue and judge a legal case in the actual Supreme Court chambers of Kentucky. Officers elected by students serve as Governor, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Media Corps Editor and Chief, and other conference leadership positions. KYA offers students the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of issues, develop critical thinking skills, and articulate their beliefs while engaging constructively with those who hold like and opposing views.
THE KENTUCKY UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY (KUNA)
KUNA is a three-day experiential learning conference in which students participate directly in simulated international diplomacy. As Ambassadors emulating the culture and representing diverse interests of UN member countries from around the world, students dive deeply into the culture of another nation and are encouraged to re-examine the world from another perspective. Students develop solutions for international issues by writing, presenting, debating, and voting on proposals. Students also celebrate cultural diversity by presenting aspects of their chosen country’s culture at the Global Village and International Stage. Officers elected by students serve as conference leadership, supported by YMCA professionals, advisers, alumni, and parent volunteers. KUNA offers students the opportunity to experience the richness of cultures from around the world, develop empathy, and hone their critical thinking skills while engaging with a wide variety of perspectives and global issues.
YEARBOOK
This is an elective for 8th-grade students. This small group of select 8th graders is in charge of design, organization, and creation of the current yearbook. Students develop skills in photo editing and general design and publishing skills for print materials.
